Thanks to many
volunteer leaf raking groups and the project volunteer coordinator,
John
Feyerer, nearly 50 senior yards were raked this fall and countless leaf
bags
disposed. Participating volunteer groups from the community who made
this
possible included the Ames High Key Club, The Light from Cornerstone
Church,
Evangelical Free Church (Gilbert and Ames), Trinity Christian Reform
Church of
Ames, St. Thomas Aquinas Service Team, Boys
with Rakes from ISU’s Birch/Welch/Roberts
Halls and ISU students
from Agriculture classes and the Electrical Engineering Honor Society. Their service gift of time and energy was
most appreciated.
Another seasonal
Heartland Outreach project has been winterizing 20 senior homes through
an Iowa
Utilities Board weatherization grant. This project is a partnership
between
Heartland Senior Services and RSVP (Retired Senior and Volunteer
Program) with
matching funds from United
Way
of Story
County.
(Lowe’s, Aquila Utilities, Hy-Vee
Lincoln Center, and
Pizza Hut in Ames
also donated some of
the supplies/volunteer lunches for this
project.) To date 16 volunteers from
RSVP and Cornerstone Church (The
Light and Cornerstone’s Nevada Division) have generously given their
Saturday
mornings to winterize houses in Story City, Nevada, Cambridge, and Maxwell with more
houses
scheduled for December.
So far these two
autumn projects have totaled over 500 volunteer hours of community
support
through Heartland’s Outreach Department. Thank
you, volunteers, for your encouragement
and intervention in
helping seniors stay in their homes as long and as comfortably as
possible.
