Bernie and Linda White
“Hands for Heartland” Auxiliary
Yes, it does
figure
that this dynamic duo would have
initially met in a volunteer setting, creating something fun and
purposeful. Bernie and Linda White,
Portland natives, discovered each other while building a Rose Festival
float at
the University of Portland in 1957 and they have been operating as a
terrific
team ever since. Whether it is raising a
family of five, influencing the lives of many students in their
teaching careers
(Linda for 20 years at St. Cecilia, Bernie for 35 years as a professor
of
biochemistry) or sharing their multi-talents through volunteering, the
Whites
have had a positive impact on this community.
And once again the Whites
are working together to create
something “fun and purposeful”. They are
enthusiastically leading the formation of “Hands for Heartland”, an
auxiliary-like group willing to assist HSS boards and staff through
advocate
and volunteer roles, particularly in the area of special events.
If you have never worked
with the Whites on a project, then
you have a treat in store for you. If you have been involved with
Ames Noon
Kiwanis, St. Thomas Aquinas, Des Moines Metro Opera Ames Chapter,
Central Iowa
Friendship Force, ISU Women’s Club, or the Central Iowa Call to Action,
then you already understand that this will
indeed be a special undertaking!
“Hands for Heartland” is
seeking members who believe in
Heartland’s mission and who are willing to be involved in fun,
short-termed
projects. For starters, the Whites are
inviting people from all corners of the county to attend the first
informational meeting, 2:00 p.m., Tues, May 9 at HSS, 205 S. Walnut,
Ames.
(233-2906).
Thank you, Whites, for
taking the leadership on this
exciting and needed endeavor. We
sincerely thank you for sharing your vitality and love for people,
making this
a better community for all.
