Volunteer Spotlight

Herb Harmison
Heartland
Computer Instructor
Heartland is proud to
recognize computer instructor, Herb Harmison, as this month’s Volunteer
Extraordinaire.
Herb was born in Dubuque, Iowa and attended Indiana
Culver Military
Academy before receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical
Engineering at
ISU in 1954. He then served in
active duty with the Army until 1959, marrying his college sweetheart
and
beginning a family of four children while stationed in Germany.
In 1962, Herb joined
the ISU faculty in Industrial/Mechanical Engineering from which he
retired after
27 years of service. Much of that
time was spent as the Industrial Placement Director.
Herb first became
involved at Heartland by answering an ad in the newspaper for a
volunteer
computer instructor. He quickly
went into operation, securing six used computers to start the class. He also programmed and installed the
computers in the classroom with the help of other volunteers. It’s not surprising that Herb
soon was tapped for the Heartland Board of Directors on which he served
from
1999 to 2001.
To date, Herb has
instructed over 200 seniors in beginning and intermediate computer
skills,
including Internet instruction. He
volunteers his time and only asks that the students consider a donation
to
Heartland for the instruction. Throughout
the years he has been responsible for over $3000 worth of donations
through this
endeavor. In
addition to computer instruction, Herb created a software program to
assist
Heartland’s county-wide transportation services in its early years of
reporting and was available for trouble shooting when necessary.

This Spring Herb most
deservedly received the Governor’s Shining Star Award for his
innovative work
with seniors in the area of computer instruction.
For hobbies,
Herb enjoys his eight grandchildren, home repairs, computers, and
traveling with
Esther. He has also taught several
classes for College for Seniors.
Herb, Heartland is
very proud and appreciative of your efforts on behalf of the seniors of
Story
County. Thank you for volunteering
to share your skills and good will in such a vital area for so many
years.
