Volunteer Spotlight

Jewelry Sale Committee

Early this Spring June Cotter, a Heartland volunteer, approached the staff with a new fundraising idea.   She thought that there must be beautiful jewelry pieces owned by people in the community who needed to downsize and would do so to support Heartland Senior Services.  This original idea, “Treasures of the Past” Jewelry Sale, came to fruition October 27 & 28 at Heartland.  The preparation had included hours and hours of volunteer work; collecting thousands of pieces of donated jewelry, sorting, pricing, cleaning, untangling--. The result was a Heartland dining area transformed for a weekend into a gigantic Grandma’s jewelry box!  Hundreds of excited customers got a great start on their holiday shopping and the weekend culminated in a significant profit for Heartland, which will go toward funds for a future facility.

June Cotter came to the project with experience in raising money for an East Coast non-profit organization before her retirement.  She knew the success of the project lay in its organization, marketing, and in the assembling of an enthusiastic team of hard-working volunteers.  The core jewelry committee consisted of  Jan Sobotka, Barbara Kenney, Barbara Gurganus, Bev Methum, Shirley Hulse, and Cotter—who spent countless hours on the project, along with HSS Activity Director Kitty Fisher.  Another dozen volunteers helped set up displays and served as helpers the day of the sale; including Hands for Heartland, Circle K, Ames High Key Club and various friends of the project.

Heartland sincerely thanks the Jewelry Sale Committee for spearheading this very successful fundraiser. Thanks also to those who donated jewelry, baked goods, and other treasures; and to the shoppers who supported Heartland.  And who knows, if you still have some jewelry under the bed, hang on, we may do this again some time!
