Pat was born and raised in
Huron, South Dakota. He joined the Navy at age 20 and served along
the East Coast of the United States
as well as in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. After his tour of duty, he attended Iowa State University
for a degree
in Zoology. This led to various jobs,
including one with the railroad. In 1976
Pat returned to Ames
to be employed by the ISU Zoology Department, where he remained until
his
retirement in 2002.
<>Fortunately for Heartland, Pat’s
definition of the word
retirement only meant “re-tiring” the wheels on his volunteermobile. It didn’t take him long to arrive on
Heartland’s doorstep, to offer his services in any way needed. Pat initially distributed flyers and brochures
for Heartland’s publicity department and since has become an important
volunteer for Heartland’s Outreach Department, helping seniors who have
special
requests; e. g., dog walking, moving furniture, etc.
In the past he also helped a senior get to
the grocery store and barber shop. <>
Another one of Pat’s major volunteer efforts is as a home-delivered
meal substitute. Heartland averages 100+
home-delivered meals daily. Pat is
willing to fill in the volunteer gaps wherever they may occur
throughout the
county, which often means several assignments a week.
His assignments (so far) have taken him to Story City,
Cambridge,
Kelley,
Gilbert, Slater and Rural Ames. <>
When Pat isn’t volunteering, he enjoys taking walks and
reading, particularly about history. He
keeps in close contact with his mom in Idaho,
his son and family in Cedar Rapids, and
his daughter
and family in Lawrence,
Kansas. Pat is the proud grandpa of four. <>
Pat, thank you for
volunteering in a tireless effort to help seniors county-wide. Your servant’s heart is a shining example for
us all. |
