Shirley Hulse
Heartland Volunteer
If you are
seeking a volunteer with organizational skills, persuasive powers,
flexibility,
tenacity and a sense of humor, then you need look no further. Shirley Hulse has just proven she has all
these skills, and more, by organizing Heartland’s Classic Car Entrance
to
“Hooray for Hollywood!” in mid-August. Her
detailed planning resulted in a fun red
carpet gala where the
Variety Show Stars and other “Celebrities for a Day” were honored as
they
disembarked at the Ames City Auditorium for Heartland’s 12th
Annual
Variety Show.
Volunteering
isn’t a novelty for Shirley. When her
children, Brian and Anne, were young she was involved with Cub Scouts
and
Campfire. Currently she volunteers at
the Hospitality Shop, Bliss
Cancer Center,
Westside Church of Christ, and the ISU Women’s Club.
Shirley
was born
and raised in Wellington,
Kansas. She attended college at Texas Christian and
Phillips University,
studying journalism. Shirley then married her high school sweetheart,
Don, who
was a microbiologist and helped him finish his schooling at Kansas
State. In 1966 the couple moved to Ames
and Don
began employment at the National Animal Disease Lab.
With her children grown, Shirley went back to
college and received her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and
Institutional
Management from Iowa State. She was
employed for 16 years as a dietitian in the nutrition program of the
Ames
Community Schools District.
With
two recent
losses in her life (her husband Don in 2001, and her daughter Anne in
2004)
Shirley’s friends urged her to join the Women’s Exercise Class and the
Bridge
Club at Heartland. These activities, her
volunteer work (she is a charter member of the Hands for Heartland) and
her
network of many friends have kept Shirley active and involved in the
community. She also is a busy
grandmother of 14 and a travel bug!
Thank
you,
Shirley, for your willingness to lead out on major volunteer projects
as well
as many smaller ones. You have been an
asset to this community for many years and we greatly appreciate your
service
on behalf of seniors in Story County.
