Shirley Shaw
Variety Show Volunteer
If the act has
been a recent showstopper at the Heartland Variety Show, there is a
good chance
that Shirley Shaw may have been involved in some way!
Shirley has been a part of the past eight
Heartland
Senior Shows, first as an Octagon Tapper, then as a Prime Time Reader
and most
recently as an originator of a surprise segment of the show. Do you remember the streaker in the 10th
Annual Show, String of Pearls? (No, it wasn’t Shirley--
but someone
who couldn’t tell her no!) And last
year’s Standing on the Corner Gals in all their finery, you guessed it,
were
under Shirley’s tuteluge. This year’s
show? You wait!
What
is the
cauldron of all this creativity? Well,
Shirley was born, raised, and educated in Cincinnati,
Ohio, receiving her
undergraduate degree in
home economics/business from the University of Cincinnati,
where she
met her husband Ken. Although she has
originally dreamed of being a journalist, she soon realized that
teaching was
her passion and followed that career path for nearly 30 years.
She
and Ken
married and moved to Michigan for
four years
where Shirley taught and received her Masters from Eastern
Michigan. Her PhD candidacy
at ISU in 1966 was cut short when she found she was pregnant with twins! After several years of raising her family,
Shirley joined the ISU staff full time in 1973 and remained there until
retirement in 1996. <>
Shirley
has been
involved in several volunteer ventures. Through
the years she has been a part of ACTORS (
in the ‘70’s) and her church’s Parish
Council, helping with the Christian Renewal Movement.
Her past decade of “retirement” was been
filled with school mentoring, hospital volunteering, Beyond Welfare,
and
Creative Dramatics with YSS and The Boys & Girls Club.
She joined the Prime Time Readers in 2000 and
became an ambassador of Heartland through their community
performances.
In
her remaining
minutes, Shirley finds time for tennis, ballroom dancing, traveling,
reading,
Ames Opera Guild, theater, cooking, and bridge.
Thank
you,
Shirley (and husband Ken) for bringing your enthusiasm and creativity
to
Heartland’s show. You are a great role
model for enjoying all aspects of life, certainly those precious
retirement years! |
